Once bedbugs have infested your house, it is very difficult to get rid of them. Instead of being concerned with how to eliminate them, or free your house from bed bugs, the first concern should be how to stop bedbugs from biting you.
Bed bug bite characteristics are as follows
- Small, hard, swollen red or white welts.
- A rash
- Itching – this may last for several days.

The following things not only reduce the chances of getting bitten but also minimize the spread of bed bugs to other parts of your house.
- Thoroughly de-clutter and clean all areas (bedding, couches, etc.) where you have been bitten by bed bugs.
- When you become aware of a bed bug infestation, it is time to throw away all your clutter. Do not forget to throw things out in sealed plastic bags: bed bugs are very fast at moving from one place to another.
- Wash all bedding and clothes in the hottest water possible (at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit). Temperatures in excess of 114 Fahrenheit have been proved to be fatal for bed bugs. Use a hot tumble drier. For drying purposes, make use of direct sunlight if possible. Nothing is better than air drying in sunlight for clothes, mattresses and other bedding.
- Always put clean and light colored sheets on bed. Light colors make bed bugs easy to detect.
- When removing sheets always roll them off instead of pulling them off. This causes removal of any eggs and bugs attached to them. Use a plastic bag to collect all the eggs and bugs from the sheet and dispose of them in an outside trash can.
- You can purchase an easy to use monitoring system that is Eco friendly: ClimbUp Insect Interceptor. It forms a barrier between bed and floor. Its design makes it very effective to stop bed bugs from biting. Bed bugs that try to climb up your bed to bite you climb to the exterior surface of the ClimbUp Insect Interceptor, and fall into the outer pitfall ring. Any thet come from the bed end up in the center well.

ClimbUp Insect Interceptor - Facts about ClimbUp are
- It is an insect trapping device.
- The center wall is 41/4” in diameter.
- The paper tape draped on the Interceptor provides a fibrous surface. This fibrous surface makes bed bugs climb up the exterior surface. You can replace this tape with paper tape available in your local pharmacy.
- Place a spacer or risers under legs of the bed to elevate the legs. You can also use a wooden block or plastic pieces. The bed can be elevated like so when the size of bed bugs is too large to fit in the climbUp Interceptor.

Bed bugs trapped in Interceptor - Prevent the ClimbUp from cracking on padded carpet. You can easily do this by distributing the weight of the bed equally.
- Apply Vaseline on frame of the bed to avoid bed bugs scaling it to bite you.
- Place the legs of bed into a vessel filled with soapy water so that when bed bugs climb up it, they fall into the soapy water and drown.

@Valerie: Hello, Valerie – I’m fighting the b-bug battle right now(apt. bldg.). While researching the topic from 20 different angles, I ran across 1 or 2 articles that speciafically stated: Do Not Use Off, Raid or any other regular type insect repellants…a person is supposed to be best off using the methods that are out there for bbugs only. ???

@Theresa: Theresa, bedbugs are a problem for anyone who encounters the little beggars. However, I think if you spent as much time and energy as u do when u are complaining about them to deal w/the problem, u might not have any bedbugs to complain about. It is far from impossible to get rid of them, in case you think they are invincible.

If u live in a single dwelling (hse or duplex) have the pros come in and treat the situation properly…you’ll go nuts trying to find a quick fix. And make sure the ‘pros’ are planning to return for at least one follow-up. If u r living in an apt or even a 4-plex or 6-plex, u will quite likely to re-locate and start over. Yeah…shitty! REAL shitty! But, there’s too many people in an apt or multi-dwelling to co-operate so the job can get done properly and it will most likely carry on ’til it’s a health hazard. That’s my situation and I think I’ll be moving quite soon. They are baaaad. Read on while ur on the net, there is alot of tips & hints and it’s NOT impossible to win the war. Good Luck.

I’m not sure if I got them at a motel in Florida but can you leave things in a car where it freezes every night and get rid of them before you even bring them into the house? I don’t have any symptoms but my husband has raised bumps on his waist so when we got home we took off our clothes on the porch and left everything outside.

So, yea i am in the middle of a bed bug problem right now. Damn bugs, just want to burn them all!! This is the first time i have ever encountered them, so i am still learning, any advice will help. Right now i am doing an experiment, I have 4 bed bugs captured, in a container no way of escaping, i even cut off the air supply, just want to see how long they will live. And it seems like they have troubles with plastic surfaces, every time they try and climb the sides they fall right back down. They want to make me suffer, ill make them suffer

This is my first time ever with the SOBs
. I will be moving soon and calling in a company to see if I could make use of their Bed Bug detection dog to see if I can salvage anything because my parents don’t want to contribute to getting all new furniture. I’m also scared for the electronics -sigh- I am 80% sure the bugs were here when we moved in 3 months ago.
