Does Baby Powder Kill Bed Bugs
Questions such as “Does baby powder kill bed bugs?” gains momentum only when one is not aware. Therefore, awareness is the most important tool, especially in when dealing with the problems like bed bugs. You can easily get rid of bed bugs with the use of many effective techniques other than baby powder.
Baby powder as a bed bug repellent
- Some baby powders consist of coarse material such as cornstarch, which makes it difficult for bed bugs to crawl on it. However, there are several theories that prove that it doesn’t work.
- It is a form of talcum powder, which can be poisonous. This is true only for humans thoough, not for bed bugs. Talcum powder can cause poisoning only when it is accidentally inhaled or consumed by someone. Bedbugs cannot be affected as drastically as humans.
- Talcum powder can cause several health hazards like breathing problems and cancer. This side effect is limited only to humans.
Preferable ways to kill bed bugs
- Get rid of bed bugs with the help of Cryonite. It utilizes a freezing mechanism to kill bed bugs. It can effectively eradicate bed bug infestations.
- You can also utilize a heat mechanism to get rid of them.
- There are several home remedies to get rid of them. Home remedies are useful only in cases of small number of bed bugs.
Chemicals to kill bed bugs
- Borax is effective in preventing bed bugs.
- Raid
- There are several insecticides available on the market which can be effectively utilized to kill bed bugs.
- There are several bed bugs repellents like Drione dust, which can be used to prevent bed bugs.
Some tips to prevent bed bugs

- You must change your bed sheets twice a week.
- Always wash bed sheets in hot water. Insecticides should not be used on bed sheets.
- Always use the dustbin to discard papers and wrapper. Bed bugs love to eat paper. Bed bugs can easily chew all plastics. They cannot resist these areas.
- Cleaning is the most important way to remove or prevent bed bugs. Closets, carpets, door jambs, wood moldings, and picture frames should be regularly removed of dust.
- Promptly plaster every crack in your walls to prevent bed bug havens.
- Do not ever purchase second hand furniture like beds, as they are the most common source of bed bugs.
- Frequent inspection of your household can lead to bed bug free house.
- Avoid placing luggage on your furniture. Mattresses and couches are highly prone to bed bug infestation.
- Do not forget to inspect the most-used areas of your house.
It is just a waste of money to purchase baby powder, especially as bed bug repellent. Baby powder is an astringent powder which is used as a deodorant for infants or kids. It is ineffective as repellent or insecticide. Think… would you treat your baby with an insecticide?

Cornstarch kills fleas. Not as an insectiside, but fleas breath through their legs and the cornstarch sticks to the waxy coating on their legs suffocating them. I was wondering if bedbugs can be killed the same way, or any other insect, for that matter.

Tina I’m sorry you are going through this and being nervous before going to be is Normal…. Let me give you some good tips!!!
1) Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth
Putting this under your bed on your frame under your mattress By your door after a big cleaning job works wonders!!!
2) tea tree oil
Preferably, use it in diluted form. You can combine tea tree oil with heat. For this you can use your hairdryer. Put your hairdryer on the hottest possible setting. Blow tea tree oil sprayed onto your mattress. It does not work on its own, so it’s better to use it in combination with other remedies.
I don’t know what your room looks like but if you have carpet get a steamer put some of the tea tree oil and water then stem away…
There is so much for just keep looking things up most of them work!!!!
Best of luck and don’t be nervous this too will pass:))

Just found a bedbug on my wall, big fight with hubby, he insists it’s a tick…..duh. I’ve seen plenty of ticks in my life, not even close. This is the first one I saw, but my daughter and I have been itching for months and have rashes all over. Dr keeps treating us for allergies. Now I am sure it is bedbugs, we do travel alot. I have the exterminater coming in 3 days, but I think I will go crazy until then. How hard is it to find these things, I am searching everywhere. I am worried if there is an infestation, I will have to remortgage my house to get rid of them…big house! Urgh!!!

We have been dealing with the bed pest for 7 months now and I must say we tried everything to get rid of them. I tried rubbing my body down with alcohol so they would not bite me and makingthat diddent work. Tried sleeping in the livingroom, that diddent work. Tried the exterminator he diddent work. So as we speak we have the dog coming out to sniff and search for the bedbugs and also the heat treatment thatis taking place that is the most effective way of killing the pest and making sure they dont come back. Its no fun being lunch for these bugs.lol.. I have been fighting this war for so long but I am happy it is finally going to be over.

@Chris: oh YES. it was a bed bug! I live in an apartment building and can attest that they love to crawl up walls — especially when you spread D Earth around the baseboards. it’s best to plug every hole near/around your walls with a product called DAP, then spread some D Earth. This should help. Raid Max also kills them on contact.

@Brandie: I tried everything for the itching, but the best was New-skin liquid bandage and Skin Shield liquid bandage….New-skin was a little better. Just paint the whole area around the bite or welt….works fair quick but not instantly. Give it a minute or 2. good luck.

@Jenn: Hi…… I am having a bed bug problem also but Im just starting my journey…..Yes, I heard rubbing alcohol will kill them too, but it has to be the 91% alcohol. If you arent using food grade diatomaceous earth, I would spray my whole mattress & ALL MY PILLOWS with it then put on a plastic mattress cover, pillow covers (wash them first too if possible, or get new ones, & put on a box spring cover, although if you use the covers I really dont see the need for the alcohol, but it cant hurt!! So I guess you can just spray around the house with it, but Im not an expert on this subject so I would check it out further. I will be using the diatomaceous earth route. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!! DANA Z

There is a problem with bed bugs at my moms house in my disabled brothers room. His room is CLEANED thoroughly Everyday so we were all shocked by bed bugs in his room!!! I looked up online(ehow) how to take care of this problem ourselves because due to a VERY tight budget from neither one working from disabilities they CAN NOT afford a professional!! We tossed his bed out his window because upon inspection I figured it would just be easier to deal with this issue if I took the biggest portion of problem out of the equation….since they can’t afford a new bed I decided I’d just give him the one out of my spare room which I knew didn’t have a bug problem! I went out and purchased 2 encasements for the mattress and boxspring and delicately put them on. I bought 90% rubber alcohol and bleach. We took everything off the walls and cleaned it with alcohol and placed all the close through a hot dryer cycle and used bleach to wipe the walls down once dried I sprayed(saturated) the furniture and baseboards! Due to the fact the room is carpeted I purchased more bottles of alcohol and DOUSED the floor. We have only seen a handful of bugs since and it’s been a week and a half. It’s time to do an additional treatment cuz it says to do it 2weeks after then once a month for 3 months I believe then if it’s under control not seeing any bugs/bites move to once every other month up to a year and a half. I hope it continues to work! Try it yourself and let me know if it works for u!

The reason none of you can get rid of them is because alcohol DOES NOT kill them. in many cases there is a colony living in the insulation of your walls, not on your beds so in addition to putting plastic covers to your mattresses and box spring you must exterminate, seal all cracks in walls and treat all fabric carpeting with heat or steam cleaning. the cracks must be sealed becaise they come out of the walls when you are asleep to bite you and go into neighbors apts. you should get rid of clutter, any old ripped or cracked furniture amd vandalizd it so the problem doesnt spread. any clothing or fabric that hasnt been steamed must be kept in plastic to contain any possible bugs or eggs until you can heat ot or leave it in the freezee for five days. this is why there is such an infestation b/c ppl believe alcohol and other things can kill them. Only exterminating, sealing cracks, heat treatment/freezing, plastic cases and constant vacuuming can destroy them. you should vacuum repetedly making sure to throw the vacuum bag outside, not leaving it in your garbage can at home and store things in plastic for three months because they may have laid eggs before you exterminated that hatch biweekly. the eggs are protected from poisons so exterminating doesnt kill them which us why you should vacuum repeatedly and seal cracks to avoid a new cycle starting over.

Boric acid kills bed bugs. It is not toxic to humans. I just rid an infestation of fleas using the same method but instead of boric acid, I used Twenty Mule Team borax laundry detergent. Now, how its done!!!!! Use a can such as a pringles can. punch a few holes in the bottom so it can be used as a s sprinkler. Use 1/3 boric acid to 2/3 table salt, or Twenty Mule team laundry detergent. Boric acid is prefered because of it’s strenth. Sprinkle the acid salt on every thing that you possible can. BB are more difficult to get rid of because the are not primaruly confined to carpet. BTW, salt is used as a weight for the power. Bed post shoule be placed on a a lid with the borax solution and it can be made into a paste by using in a wet flour mixture. (flour balls) This mixture can be placed on an surface that it will adhere to. This will require a few to several treatments but it is soooooooooooo easy. Good luck.

my 4 year old son has over the last 6 days had a lot of little red spots come up on his back, i have sprayed his mattress with staykill which is a flea/dustmite spray. i was given a fairly new mattress by a family member over 5 months ago and it has only just started to occur. the bites seem to go after a few days but have searched the house and cannot find any critters anywhere. i was told that they can come through your skirting boards from a neighbours house is this true. he seems to have fresh bites every day and to me they didnt really look like bites but have taken him to docs and they sayig that is what it is. does this sound like bedbugs????

This is the second time I’m dealing with bedbugs. In this case my bites are different from the first time. First time was small red spots like a flea bite but this time I have bites that are bigger than an half dollar. Took me til tonight to know what was biting me. Woke up and found the nasty little critter. I have basically turned the whole bed upside down. When out and got some bombs by Hot Shot I hope this stuff works.I will let you know if it works. Need to know how to get the bite from being swollen, hard and red for 24hrs. This is the worst part of it all, I am using Benadryl Gel for the itching take a little while to work but I still have the huge bump (not good when I’m working when people ask). Any sugguestion please help.

Use bug bombs and set them off every 3 days near your beds. I covered everything with diacomacious earth but you need to be able to just puff it here over everything and let it set, it’s a boundery they don’t want to get into. It takes about 6 hours for the bug to die after it has gotten into it, but it dies.
I’m still fighting them this is not easy but I have not ever had many of them.@margaret:

I have lost so much sleep since finding some bed bugs in my bed. I even sleep with a flashlight every night. My boyfriend and I have washed the bedding and curtains and we put an encasement on our mattress and pillows in our bedroom and sprayed hot shot bed bug killer around the window sills and baseboards every other day and the last couple of nights i haven’t been bit or seen any but we are planning on going to buy some diatomaceous earth to sprinkle around our house and i am going to buy some bed bug detectors to put in our living room to make sure they aren’t in there. I am also going to purchase a steam cleaner cause heat kills them. There is a website bedbugsupply.com that sells steamers, bedbug traps, bedbug detectors, powders and sprays. My bites weren’t real bad but my boyfriends daughter has them all over her arms and she has itched them so bad her arms are all scabbed up. Her room is a mess and she has clothes laying all over her room and she won’t clean her room and she refuses to believe that we have bedbugs in the house and it really peeves me off. We had her clean her room but she did a half ass job. I am worried that even though me and my boyfriend may get rid off them in our bedroom that she will infest the rest of the house. We don’t let her into our bedroom cause of this. Go to bedbugsupply.com and browse there website and see what kind of products they have. We can’t afford an exterminator so we will keep fighting them on our own.

Just use over 90% Concentration of alcohol , put it in a spray bottle and spray the corners and anything that you feel that these bugs will come from and live into it.
Neem oil I heard is also a natural killer and repellent too. Google it and find how to dulite it with water an soap.

My husband and myself take care of 4 buildings…..we were emptying out an apartment when i noticed a couple of bedbugs on a mattress…we got rid of the mattress and finished out the day…..when we returned home…i stripped immediately, threw clothes in washer and jumped in the shower…..while my dummy husband sat on the loveseat…that same night he had bite marks on his ankles and calves and complained he was itchy…in the meantime..i have no bites…needless to say we argued over carelessness…and i won the battle…The next day..i steamed cleaned my living room set and small carpet..vacuumed curtains and sprayed alcohol over just about everything…i then went to hardware store and bought some sleep away sprays and a small spray bottle to spray on our clothing and footwear before we leave the apartment…I am very itchy but can never find what feels like its crawling on me and still have no bites…i took a flashlight in the dark as my husband was asleep and seen nothing….my question is….did i take proper precautions and can a couple of bedbugs that possibly hitched a ride home with us be so violent and fast? Any help would be so greatly appreciated…

I too have had heck with those bugz…I have found that rubbing alot of lotion on after I get bit helps. I’m also allergic to the bites, and take Benedryl. The best luck I have had was with Hot Shot bb spray. I also have vacuumed, then bought a steamer from walmart. Spray the steam over everything in sight and then bug spray. I thought I had them gone, but missed some because they are back! Next month, I’m moving to a new apartment, and need some advice on how to get rid of them for good. i will start spraying every 10 days to kill those little buggers! Where do yall get the D Earth stuff?

It’s the next day now-I found the Diatomaceous Earth Powder (4lb bag) at Home Depot for under $10.00! It’s in the gardening department. So far, I have dusted the carpeting, bed, curtains, and the lower end of the packed boxes. Last night, before I went to bed, I sprayed the rubbing alcohol/water mix on me before I went to bed. Happy to say, everything is going great so far! No bites! I had a great nights sleep! Today, I will finish dusting everything with this wonderful powder. It is for the most part odorless too! Since I am moving in about 3 weeks, I have alot packed in plastic totes, the powderr doesn’t stick to these so good, so I will blast them with the steam from my clothes iron. Thank you everyone for the advice and info on the Diatomaceous Earth! I’m so glad I found this web site!

@Juana telles: We have recently discovered that we have a bed bug infestation as well, we have a small baby and he had a rash all over. First we thought he was having allergic reactions to his formula or the new food he was eating, wasn’t that so then we thought maybe it was something we were washing his clothes etc..not that, so then we thought it might be something we started cleaning the carpet (NEVER DREAMED WE HAD BED BUGS!!) Anyway, after actually finding one in his crib we found out what it was, those little F&*#@^S were tearing him up!! We’re pretty sure they came from his mattress or bedding so make sure you check it real good even check any toys, nightlights or mirrors, mobile that may be hanging in his crib and definitely get one of the covers your baby’s mattress as well, I pray this doesn’t happen to your baby! Good Luck
